Demonstrative

There are two types of demonstratives:

• Adjectives: describes a noun
  • Example: Give me THAT book
• Pronouns:takes the place of a noun
  • Example: THIS is mine

Demonstrative adjectives:

English

Masculine

Feminine

this	este	esta
these	estos	estas
Farther Away
that	ese	esa
those	esos	esas
At a Distance
that (over there)	aquel	aquella
those (over there)	aquellos	aquellas

Example:

1. Este libro es mio. (this book is mine)
2. Quiero aquella casa ( I want that house over there)

Demonstrative pronouns:

English	Masculine	Feminine
this (one)	éste	ésta
these (ones)	éstos	éstas
Farther Away
that (one)	ése	ésa
those (ones)	ésos	ésas
At a Distance
that (one over there)	aquél	aquélla
those (ones over there)	aquéllos	aquéllas

Examples:

1. Quiero comprar esos. (I want to buy those)
2. Aquéllas son mias. (those over there are mine)

NOTE: The only difference between adjectives and pronouns is the accent mark on the pronouns.

Demonstrative Adjectives

• those adjectives whose function is to point at something
• they ALWAYS accompanies a noun
• they DON'T use an accent
• if it doesn't have a noun next to it, then it becomes a PRONOUN

Singular Masculine

• este (this), ese (that), aquel (that)

Plural Masculine

• estos (these), esos (those), aquellos (those)

Singular Feminine

• esta (this), esa (that), aquella (that)

Plural Feminine

• estas (these), esas (those), aquellas (those)

Examples:

• Me gusta este perro. I like this dog.

• Prefiero estas computadoras. I prefer these computers.

• Voy a comprar ese coche. I'm going to buy that car.

• Me gustan aquellas casas. I like those houses.
